PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
 


Assesses patient status with patient/family input and identifies age-appropriate patient care needs/problems that includes bio-physical, psycho-social, spiritual, environment, self-care, and educational needs and will serve to focus the provision of nursing care at admission, transfer, and discharge.

Plans individualized age appropriate evidence-based patient care through a interdisciplinary team approach and through interdisciplinary patient care conference, ongoing patient assessments, re-evaluation of patient problems or needs.

Utilizes professional skills and judgement in prescribing, delegating and coordinating the plan of care; includes appropriate resources to manage patient care path/CareMaps/variances. Administers medications and treatments according to nursing policy.

Guides and directs professional and nonprofessional personnel in the delivery of patient care, evaluates patient care effectiveness, modifies the plan of care according to age appropriate patient nursing policy. Utilizes care paths/CareMaps to develop and modify the patient's plan of care. Monitors variances and takes action on these variances.

Provides the following nursing services: a. Independent; b. Inter-dependent; c.  Delegated.

Identifies patient/significant other learning needs and initiates and provides for age appropriate education.

Responds to patient calls, anticipates individual patient needs, and assures patient safety and comfort through regular rounds, environmental maintenance, and other appropriate safety measures.

Demonstrates the ability to perform in an accurate and precise manner in crisis and emergency situations.  Demonstrates effective management of rapidly changing situations.
 
Hours: 6:30pm to 7:00am, every 3rd weekend and holiday rotation','!*!Essential Job Functions:


Utilizes the nursing process to assess and prioritize patient needs.

Formulates, implements and evaluates the patient’s plan of care. Adjusts plan of care in consultation with the Charge nurse as appropriate and implements plan.

Uses basic communication skills to provide care to assigned patients/ families. Relays pertinent information through appropriate documentation and referral to other health care team members such as medicine, dietary and support staff. Initiates discharge planning working in collaboration with the appropriate staff.

Initiates appropriate nursing action in crisis or emergency situations.

Carries out physician orders.

Provides continuity of care to meet the patient’s changing needs.

Records information on the patient record in accordance with charting guidelines.

Uses available teaching aids to implement teaching plans of assigned patients and revises the plan based on evaluation of effectiveness.

Demonstrates knowledge about the ethical, legal, professional values of nursing, guided by the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.
 
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Education
Knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of an accredited school of nursing to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse.
Will complete Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within five years of hire from an accredited nursing program (if an ADN or Diploma RN)
 
Licensure and Certification
Current Nebraska license as a Registered Nurse.
Current certification in Basic Life Support obtained within 30 days of hire or transfer date
Current certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program obtained within 90 days of hire or transfer date
After 2 years of employment, strongly encouraged to pursue certification in specialty area.
 
Experience
Approximately six months on-the-job experience to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of hospital, unit, departmental procedures and policies to meet quality and quantity standards for the job.
 
Skills
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to gather and exchange information with physicians, patients, families, visitors and other units and departments.
 
Analytical skills necessary to provide care, to prepare care plan, to interpret available data to develop and implement effective nursing care and problem solving measures for patients' physical, mental, and spiritual well being and to assist and care for intrapartum, post-partum and medical surgical patients.
