As a matter of fact, many hospitals are finding that there is a shortage of nurses, and that they can't recruit enough nurses! As such, since they aren't able to find enough nurses within the talent pool of their cities, it's very common for a hospital to go to staffing agencies to recruit travel nurses.
A travel nurse does all of the same things that a permanently stationed nurse would do. They require all of the same education. The only difference between the travel nurse and a permanently stationed nurse, is of course that the travel nurse travels. Also, this type of nurse isn't under a contract with any one hospital. They are sort of like military members; they are stationed at a particular hospital for a set period of time, and when that time is up, they move onto another duty station. Many nurses love travel nurse jobs, because it enables them to not only travel to the places they normally wouldn't have, but it broadens their career possibilities as well.
For example, if a nurse were to work in a hospital, she would be hired for one particular position, and one particular department. The nurse might have to wait for another position to open in order to get that new position. Not only this, but they would have to compete with other nurses wanting the same position as they did. However, when one goes after travel nurse jobs, they can try their hand at a variety of positions in hospitals all over the country. This gives them more information with regards to any fields that they like to specialize in as a nurse, and it enables them to broaden their horizons, with regards to on-the-job education. Beyond this, many nurses love to travel.
For example, since they will be traveling all over the country to various hospitals, they will have to make arrangements to stay at a hotel or at some sort of temporary housing. It's probably best for the travel nurses to stay at a long-term hotel facility, or to find out if they can get themselves a short-term apartment lease. They will be responsible for their own expenses, as the hospital won't pay for their moving expenses. However, since the travel nurse works with an agency, they will have lots of resources with regards to the resources they need in a particular city or town in order to get settled in. In addition, many travel nurses set up a roommate arrangement so that they can have the support of another nurse in the town that they will be living in.
Travel nurse jobs are easy to come by, and one needs just needs to find an agency who will hire them. For the person who loves to travel around and wants variety, this is the job for them.
