Monitor
Working as a labor and delivery nurse, you will have to monitor the vital signs of the mother and her fetus. If there are any signs of distress during childbirth, you will have to be able to recognize it - such as unconsciousness or erratic heart rates.
Instruction
This type of nurse is required to instruct the patient as she is going through childbirth. This includes instructing her about positioning, timing of contractions and appropriate pushing methods.
Advocate
Some of the women who are in labor have their own plans for giving birth. So if this is apparent, you will have to accommodate to her preferences. This could be for pain medications, which nurses are required to advocate to make sure that the mother's demands are met and don't pose as a threat to her health.
Emotional Support
Labor and delivery nurses are great sources of support when it comes to the emotional aspects of child labor. They are required to provide the patient with a sense of control with the use of touch and listening, and remaining calm.
Results
It's been noted that women are more satisfied with their birthing experience when they are assisted by nurses they give great care.
