As a pediatric nurse, you will be entitled to help children, infants and adolescents with their health care. You will be able to work in a variety of health care settings, including clinics and hospitals. In pediatric nursing, you will have to obtain the credentials needed to become a nurse in this field. You will have to acquire an education, testing and experience before you can begin practicing.

Identification

In order to become a pediatric nurse, you will have to go to school to either get an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in nursing. After you graduate from the courses, you will have to take the standardized exam called NCLEX-RN. Once you pass this, you will be able to obtain a state license or registration to work as a pediatric nurse.

Features

In some instances, you will be able to obtain education and training within a Versant Residency Program, which is available in some hospitals. Some hospitals use seasoned pediatric nurses to help with new graduates.

Considerations

When studying to get into the pediatric nursing field, you will have to complete at least 1,800 hours of experience in a two year period; then you will be able to take the exam through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. Once you pass that exam, you will receive your credentials as a pediatric nurse.

Types

If you would like to advance in your career in pediatrics, you can obtain a master's science degree in the nursing field. You are also able to choose to become a pediatric nursing practitioner, once you have met the requirements of your state.

Significance

As a pediatric nurse practitioner, you will be able to practice within a wider scope and with more autonomy than if you didn't have a graduate degree at all.
